The UK’s Largest Slate Mine
Slate is a form of rock often used for construction purposes which has a long-standing association with Wales. The North West of the country is rich in slate mines, and for a number of years the industry dominated the region’s economy.
The area remains the largest slate mining region in the UK, though production is now on a much smaller scale due to the emergence of alternative materials such as tiles. Nonetheless, Wales is very proud of its slate mining history and celebrates it at the National Slate Museum.
